The Team

Rally For Health is a professional and cultural exchange between medical care providers from the US and India that brings free mobile clinics to under-serviced areas in India. For added adventure, each team will tackle the back roads of rural India on the country’s most celebrated mode of transport - the auto rickshaw.

We are dedicated to providing medical services to under-serviced areas; educating on an important public health issue, tobacco, and how it can affect people’s health; and raising money for two great NGOs: Doctors For You and Cross Cultural Care (C3), which both provide humanitarian work in the urban slums and rural villages of India and beyond.
Come with us on a unique adventure-with-a-cause from Mumbai to New Delhi. American/Indian medical teams will live, work, and travel together for four weeks as they volunteer their medical services in the slums of Mumbai, take an overnight train to the blue city of Jodhpur, ride camels to a village to offer medical care to the people of Rajasthan, and ride like maniacs on their own auto rickshaws to all points in between.

In a joint effort, some doctors from USA and Doctors for You, India, a Humanitarian NGO, will go on a month-long auto rickshaw rally across six states to create awareness about the dangerous effects of tobacco. The participants will cover more than 100 towns and cities in these states. India is ranked first in smokeless consumption of tobacco globally. Dr Ravikant Singh from Doctors for You said: “About 275 million Indians are in the habit of consuming tobacco in several forms. The rally for health intends to make people aware of the consequences of smoking and consuming tobacco. People are not unaware. They just ignore.” Doctors for You, a recipient of the British Journal Award, along with the doctors from USA will go around the states in the next 25 days. The doctors will talk about the harmful effects of tobacco, hold one-on-one discussions, group discussions, technical paper presentations, screening of specialized movies, enact plays and skits. “We will also have competitions like poster making and distribute pamphlets and posters,” added Dr Ravikant. According to recent the Global Adult Tobacco Survey, about 275 million people in India are addicted to tobacco, and one-third of them use it in smokeless form. India is the greatest producer of areca nut, producing about 3,30,000 million tons a year (nearly half of global areca nut production), and most of them are consumed within the country. The gutka industry in India has grown from small beginnings forty years ago to a multi-billion rupee industry with nearly 375 brands, of which, nearly 100 are located in Mumbai. It is estimated that gutka and paan masala worth around Rs10,000 crore is sold in the country annually. Due to its low cost, easy availability, attractive packaging, aggressive marketing, innocent adolescents and youths are becoming addicted to them. In India, over 5 million children under 15 are addicted to gutka. Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, head and neck cancer surgeon from Tata hospital who has also been actively spearheading a campaign against tobacco products, said, “Unfortunately, most cancer patients in India come to us when they are in their last stages. Many of them are young. This happens because most of the people start chewing and consuming tobacco products while in school.” Dr Chaturvedi is also part of the rally.

The DFY was one of the first organizations to respond to the SOS of people of Bihar. Armed within infrastructural support from the Indian Railways and in association with international NGOssuch as Mercy Malaysia, the DFY launched a massivemedical relief & rehabilitation operation. Scores of volunteer doctors were mobilized from all around the country.
In the first phase of operation, the organization targeted the worst affected districts. In the second phase, the doctors undertook rehabilitative work after the floodwaters had recessed. In total, DFY organized around 300 mobile health camps over a period of 6-months where more than 1.3 lakh patients were treated. In addition, around food, clothes, medicines, waterproof tents, cooking utensils & water purification plants were mobilized through systematic awareness and information campaigns all over the country. The DFY also partnered with the media to create awareness against the possibility of an epidemic in the wake of the floods. The work done by DFY was highly appreciated by people, Infact, Dr.Ravikant Singh, who spearheaded this operation was conferred the SAARC Youth Award 2009 for his outstanding contributions during the Bihar floods.

Apart from continuing to work at Bhutahi, Kuseha & Jirva camps, in association with TISS & Delhi School of Social Work (Delhi University), our team toured the some still marooned villages, namely, Baisa, Batha, & Duvaniya. These villages are still cut off from main land, & they don't have any existing road link. Our team had to use local boats to reach these areas. People are still marooned over there for weeks now.

We carried out health check up, stressed the need for preventive measures to the local villagers & carried out treatment of the patients.

Today, our associate team from SECL (Coal India Ltd.) returnd from the flood affected areas after working for almost three weeks over there. The team comprised of 11 medical & paramedical professionals, & was led by Dr. Arvind Kumar. Dr. Kumar is a renowned ENT specialist of Chhatisgarh, & he has the experience of conducting charitable surgical camps in the tribal areas of Chhatisgarh, Madhyapradesh, and Jharkhand for over 15 years.

Under his able leadership, our associate team treated 10,556 patients, conducted 26 deliveries and distributed over 81 cartons (worth lakhs) to the patients. Initially, the team worked at Simrahi, Raghopur from 20th september to 28th september, & then, at Katiya, Supaul from 29th September to 7th October.At Kataiya, they worked at the camp run by NGO, Punarwas.

Flood Relief Work today

Continuing with the relief operations in Bihar, team of doctors from Doctors for You is currently working in the camps organized jointly by Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Delhi School of Social Works (Delhi University). There are 3 fixed camps and 1 mobile camp.

The fixed camps are at Bhutehi, Kushaha(place wheer the dam on River Kosi has broken), Jirva and a one near Dhuvania village in Sonbarsa block.

The team of doctors attended to 212, 275, 140 patients respectively.

130 patients were treated at the camp near Dhuvania. The team also conducted few deliveries, health prescription, chlorination of the water, distributed ORS packets and Vitamin A tablets to children.

The volunteers of Delhi School of Social Works have opened a school where they themself are teaching.

What we did??

1. Our team of 48+ doctors got subdivided to see patients in the following zones:

a) Araria & Purniya

b) Khagaria – Sadar Hospital & an NGO there

c) Saharsa Sadar Hospital OPD – on request of Civil Surgeon there

d) Saharsa Sadar Hospital Emergency – on request of CMO there

e) Katayia – Relief camp of Mr Prakash Jha of Mumbai

f) Supaul – with AIIMS doctors

g) Badgaon – a village with population of 10,000 where our team was the first ever to reach for any relief.

we started managing critical patients by bringing them into EMRI ambulance which had all the supports & paraphernalia but space.

1. Army Doctors were generous to offer IV fluids from there surplus stocks, if needed

2. Met WHO officials who briefed us about untouched areas and guided our thoughts regarding medical requirements there

3. Met AIIMS doctors who utilized us effectively in the medical relief camps identified by them and briefed us about the ground situations

4. Met MSF(Medicine Sans Frontiers) doctor, who is happy to consider for joint activity with D4U where the mobile team will go and serve in the deep interiors and stay there only for 5 days at a stretch

An appeal to help the family of a martyr

We earnestly appeal to all the concerned citizens, corporate houses, public sector & other bodies to come forward & help the family of Dr. Chandrakant Patil, who died serving the flood victims of Bihar. with his loss, the country has lost a brilliant doctor & an able son.

Dr. Patil braved difficult circumstances & inhospitable terrain to provide succour to hundreds of the people in the flood ravaged areas of Bihar. He had a humble beginning in life, & with his hard work and grit he had risen to his present position. coming from from a very poor background, he empathised with the distressed people & understood their difficulties during trying circumstances. All of us had high hopes from him. We always believed that whenever any disaster befell anywhere, Dr. Patil would be the first to venture ahead for helping people. However, our hopes have been cut short by the vagaries of nature.

Dr. Chandrakant Patil is a martyr, & it's the duty of the nation to help the family whose son lost his life helping fellow citizens.

We are setting up a dedicated fund to help his family, and we appeal to all of you to contribute to this fund. Although we can't mitigate the loss of son, we can make sure that a martyr's family doesn't have to suffer due to financial difficulties.

Sad Demise of Dr. Chandrakant Patil

This is the saddest day in the history of MARD. Today morning one of our colleagues met a tragic end in course of flood relief operations in Bihar. Dr. Chandrakant Patil left us in the wee hrs in the morning today. He was extending medical relief to 100s of patients at a relief camp at Katariya, Supaul supported by noted filmmaker Mr. Prakash Jha.

After hard day’s work (extended to late night) Dr. Patil was out in the open along with his colleagues when he was struck by lightening in the late night yesterday (10:30PM on 21^st September, 2008). In spite of the best of the efforts he could not be saved. After the postmortem his body is being brought to Mumbai via Delhi.

Dr. Patil was pursuing his residency in Preventive and Social medicine at KEM Hospital, Mumbai after his MBBS from BJ Medical College, Pune. Dr. Patil made a very humble beginning from a very small town (Dhule) of Maharashtra. Coming from a very poor family (mill worker father and housewife mother), he was able to get a chance to get an admission in the most prestigious residency programs of social medicine in the country. Dr. Patil survived by a younger sister (20 years) along with elderly parents at home.

In last few days Dr. Patil had saved thousands of lives in the flood affected area in Bihar. Not only Maharashtra but the whole country has lost a brilliant doctor, a brave citizen and a proud son.

There is no way we can fill the loss to the family of Dr. Patil. But we appeal to the Govt. of Bihar, Govt. of India, and Govt. of Maharashtra, other government and non-government bodies and the concerned citizen to extend their help to the family of Dr. Patil.

A team of 40 doctors & 1 social worker left Mumbai on 15th september for Patna. it reached Patna 0n 17th september, & was joined by another team of 15 doctors & non medico volunteers from Delhi and Bhopal.

On 17th, A brief training session was held for them by Dr. Vivek Chhabra, executive coordinator (emergency medicine) of "Doctors For You".
After felicitation by Bihar Rafta committee, which was held at Bihar Urdu Academy, the team of doctors & non medico volunteers left for its base camp at Khagariya district.

Bihar Flood Relief-Phase II

Phase II: Relief Operations
1. In this phase Doctors for you will be concentrating on providing medicos and medicines to various organizations engaged in setting up relief camp in Kahgaria district.

2. Dr. Robert Montana, US trained Emergency Medicine Practitioner with experience of relief operations worldwide, is helping Doctors for you in planning of this phase. Presently he is in Madhepura district assessing the requirement.

3. Doctors for you will be sending a team of 50 doctors to Khagaria district starting from this week. These doctors will have their base camp at Khagariya near Mansi station and will work with the relief camps in surrounding areas.

4. We will be mobilizing additional medicine worth Rs 25lacs which would be dispensed through these camps.

5. We will be also advising other relief camps/agencies on the safe disposal of animal carcass (major source of epidemic in post disaster situations) and on the provisions of safe drinking water. We have also sent doctors for this specific purpose.

6. We have also taken approval from various authorities of Medical Associations to send the interns to Bihar.

Bihar Flood Relief: Phase-I

Phase I: Immediate Action

Collected fifteen truckloads (more than 25 tonnes) of relief material including food, clothing and Utensils and dispatched the same through Indian Railways to Purnia and Khagariya districts of Bihar. This material was distributed through Doctors for You, Art of Living, Government of Bihar and Army to about 5000 flood victims families situated in Purnia, Saharsa and Supaul districts in Bihar.
Medicines worth Rs 10 lacs (donated by Cipla, Elder, PDP Parentral Drug India Ltd, Mr and Mrs Khatri from Kandivali, Dr Arun Singh, Dr Anil Lunia, etc) were sent by air cargo (courtesy: Jetlite airways) to Patna. These medicines are being used for relief camps at Purnia, Pharbisganj run by Art of Living, Supaul by Indian Army, Saharsa and Madhepura by DFY.
Various individuals and organizations have donated about Rs. 2 lakhs to Doctors for You through various channels. These funds would be used for procurement of medicines as well as supporting the logistic arrangement of Medical and Non Medical volunteers.
A team of doctors was sent to Pharbisganj and Purnia on urgent basis for the camps administered by Art of Living.

Collected five truckloads of relief material including food, clothing and Utensils and dispatched the same through Indian Railways to Purnia and Khagaria District. This material was distributed through Art of Living, Bihar, to about 10,000 flood victims families situated in 25 villages of Saharsa , Purnia & Madhepura districts in Bihar.
Medicines worth more than 10 lacs (donated by Cipla, PDP Parentral Drug (india) limited, Elder pharma, Mr & Mrs. Khatri, Dr Arun singh, Dr Anil Luniya, Mr Atul Shah) were sent by air cargo (courtesy: Jetlite airways) to Patna. These medicines are being used for relief camps at Purnia run by Art of Living, Supoul run by Indian Army & saharsa run by Govt.
Various individuals and organizations have donated about Rs. 2 lakhs to Doctors for You through various channels. These funds would be used for procurement of medicines as well as supporting the logistic arrangement of Medical and Non Medical volunteers.

Phase II: Relief Operations
In this phase Doctors for you will be concentrating on providing medicos and medicines to various organizations engaged in setting up relief camp in Kahgaria district.
Dr. Robert Montana, US trained Emergency Medicine Practitioner with experience of relief operations worldwide, is helping Doctors for you in planning of this phase. Presently he is in Khagaria district accessing the requirement.
Doctors for you will be sending a team of 50 doctors to Khagaria district starting from this week (15th September). These doctors will have their base camp at Maheshkhut & Beldaur (Zero mile) near mansi station and will work with the relief camps in surrounding districts (Saharsa,Supoul,Madhepura & Purnia ).
We will be mobilizing additional medicine worth 25 lacs which would be dispensed through these camps.
We will be also advising other relief camps/agencies on the safe disposal of animal carcass (major source of epidemic in post disaster situations) and on the provisions of safe drinking water.
We have also taken approval from various authorities of Medical Associations to send the interns to Bihar.

Phase III: Long term Rehabilitation
We will be focusing on providing the medicos and medicine for the treatment of the victims as well as arrange for psychological therapeutic sessions to help people overcome the POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER .
